Why Foster? What Foster Parents Say
If there are no foster families available in the state, the outcome is very, very abysmal. I’ve worked at a county agency before where we would sit in a conference room overnight with the children until a home came available. Other counties will use shelters or group homes for children. It’s a residential setting that’s not appropriate for kids. It's quite terrifying. So we absolutely prefer placing children in a foster family.

I definitely love each young lady who lives in our home. Absolutely. Without a doubt. We never take a child until we have met them. So I know that their personality is going to mesh well with our home and our family.

You learn to love that child pretty quickly. The ability to show unconditional love is important as a foster parent, because kids are going to test that. And you can't let what they do or if they're having a bad day get in the way of how you love them. So a child gets a hug good night and a ‘You did great today,’ regardless of how bad we struggled that day. They all need unconditional love.

The love that I got from my first foster parent was great. She was like my grandmother. To this day, I still refer to her as my grandmother, because we grew that really strong bond. I lived with her from age five to sixteen. She taught me who I was going to be. She shaped me into who I am today.
